Summer 2024
Dear deep-sea science community,
This summer, Alvin is turning 60 and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution will be celebrating the major dates that marked the birth of this storied deep submergence vehicle: commissioning on June 5, first tethered dive on June 26, and first untethered dive on August 4.
As the scientists and engineers that work most closely with Alvin, we’d like you to help us celebrate.
Here’s how:
- Record a “Happy Birthday” video and post it on social media. Share a story about a memorable dive or a dive you hope to take. Use the hashtag #Alvin60, and tag @whoi.ocean, @NSFgov, and @usnavyresearch on Instagram (posts with these tags will also appear on Alvin’s birthday website).
- Join us in Woods Hole for Alvin’s birthday pub crawl on June 21! Meet at the Landfall at 5:00pm. Dress code: red on top, white on bottom.
- Keep planning scientific expeditions with Alvin. Thanks to the Office of Naval Research, the National Science Foundation, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the vehicle team here at WHOI, the science community has access to a completely updated submersible, ready to continue its legacy of transforming deep sea science.
As we mark six decades, our celebration is forward-looking, because we are operating a vehicle built for the future. At 60, Alvin is just getting started. |
